Software Glitch Hits DMV, Others

A nationwide outage was caused by a software glitch that led to problems with computer systems across the country today (Friday), including some emergency and bank networks.

Locally, county and municipal governments, 911 and law enforcement agencies have reported no problems.

License plate and driver’s license agencies are offline, according to a press release from the Dept. of Motor Vehicles. The outage occurred when a software update by CrowdStrike apparently failed. NCDMV will attempt to reach out to customers to reschedule appointments.

NCDMV operates 115 driver license offices statewide.  The 126 license plate agencies in North Carolina are operated by private businesses but are overseen by NCDMV. They have also been affected.

The outage is also affecting some MyNCDMV.gov online services.

The problem began early Friday with a line of bad code in CrowdStrike, in an Internet program used for security by hundreds of banks, government agencies and large businesses. The president of CrowdStrike posted on X that the problems were not a cyber attack, as had been initially feared.
