The temporary bridge into Crusoe Island on Dock Road was closed today after part of the bridge failed around 3:30 p.m..

Residents said there are crews on the bridge trying to effect repairs. Andrew Barksdale, spokesman for the Department of Transportation, said repairs to the temporary bridge should be complete this evening (Monday).

“They have to be sure it is stable and solid underneath before it can be driven across,” he said. “It’s not just repairing the top.”

Barksdale said the damage appears to be storm related, either from Tropical Storm Betty or one of the severe storms that passed through the area Saturday and Sunday.

The temporary bridge is part of  a major improvement project to lower the flood risk along Dock Road into Crusoe Island. Three separate drains have been rehabilitated with larger box culverts, and the bridge is being expanded over the Waccamaw River.

This is a developing story.
