The Good News for Sept. 6

If you like flea markets, farmers markets, festivals and food, you have a lot of choices Saturday and in the coming weeks.

Fair Bluff’s community market is Saturday starting at 8 a.m. Yard salers, produce vendors, crafters, artisans and bakers are welcome. It’s on Riverside Drive.

There’s a community yard sale in Hallsboro Saturday at Thurman Garage, 847 Hallsboro Road South. Spaces are $15 for a space, or $20 with a table. Call 910.612.3412.

Saturday is the North Carolina Honey Festival in downtown Whiteville. There will be vendors, activities for the kids, educational booths, and of course, honey products of all kinds. The event will center around the Museum of Science at Columbus and Madison streets.

Our happiest story of the week – Nancy Etheridge Varney has her Peanut home. The Chihuahua dog went missing near land of lakes golf course this week. The crafty old fellow managed to avoid cars and coyotes while Nancy and her husband searched the area. Peanut finally was found near a Tshirt Nancy left beside the road. He was tired, hungry and thirsty, but happy to be home with his family.

The Wildlife Commission is urging folks to avoid killing snakes unless a person is actually in danger. The commission is reporting larger than usual numbers of protected rattlesnakes being killed in the state.

Most venomous snakes will leave you alone if they are not harassed or cornered. It’s against state law to kill a rattler without cause.

St. Paul AME Zion Church on Moneyhole Road in Freeman has a food pantry every Thursday at noon. Everyone is welcome.

The veterans memorial park will host a 9/11 observance on September 11 at 9 a.m. at the park on U.S. 701 south of Whiteville. The public is welcome.

September 14 is also the Cruise in for Heroes at Tabor City. Events start downtown at 4 p.m. There’s a barbecue cookoff, touch a truck, car truck and motorcycle cruise in, and the parade Saturday night. Lights will be dimmed downtown so everyone can enjoy the lights of fire trucks and police vehicles in a parade commemorating September 11, 2001 and honoring all those who serve. Contact the Tabor Chamber if you’d like to participate.
