Three people were arrested early Sunday after a van was stopped for a lack of a license tag.
Deputy J. Coleman was on patrol in the 18000 block of U.S. 74 near Bolton when he spotted the van minutes after midnight Sunday morning. Dale Malpass, Sally Hewett and Paul McKenzie were in the vehicle, the report said. Cpl. C. Cotton and Deputy Z. Morris also responded to the traffic stop.
“During the encounter, Sally Hewett appeared nervous” while the deputies were searching her handbag, the report said. Malpass “became defensive” when asked if there was any contraband in the van. Deputies called for a tow truck, since the van had no license or registration.
While they were performing an inventory, the report said a jar containing crystal methamphetamine and a meth pipe were found near McKenzie’s feet in the back seat. A shotgun and ammunition were found between the front and rear seats as well. Hewett admitted to ownership of the pipe, the report said.
A records check showed that Malpass was a convicted felon and banned from possessing firearms. All three were taken into custody.
Malpass, 52, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, and held under $5,000 secured bond. His address was listed as 264 Kelly Lane, Delco.
Hewett, 37, was held under $1,000 secured bond, charged with possession of meth and paraphernalia. Her address was listed as 264 Kelly Plantation Rd., Delco.
McKenzie, 55, gave his address as 2806 Livingston Chapel Rd., Delco. He was charged with possession of methamphetamine, and released on a promise to appear.
