State highway officials are seeking comments about a proposed roundabout for a busy downtown Whiteville intersection.

The Department of Transportation plans to convert the intersection of Lee, Franklin, and Madison streets to a roundabout with no traffic lights. The new configuration will include traffic islands and approach lanes, according to a DOT announcement.

The new street will have an 18-foot travel lane and a 14-foot apron designed to handle trucks, buses and other large vehicles. An artist’s rendering shows that no buildings will be affected by the project.

The project is being funded by a federal grant through the Carbon Reduction Program. Roundabouts reduce idling at intersections, DOT said, and help cut carbon emissions.

Comments may be sent to us107roundabout-whiteville@publicinput.com. You can also leave a voice message at 984.205.6615, code 7366.
