An investigation is underway after a local man serving time for drug charges died Wednesday while incarcerated at Albemarle Correctional Facility.
Curtis Levi Moore, 38, died at a hospital near the prison early Wednesday. A spokesman for the Department of Adult Corrections said Moore was transported to the hospital Saturday around 8 p.m. for undisclosed reasons. He was brought back to the prison around 2 a.m.
EMS returned to the prison on another call around 4 p.m., and Moore was again found in need of treatment. He was taken back to the hospital and admitted. He was pronounced dead at 3:32 p.m. Wednesday.
Brad Deen of the DAC said local law enforcement and the state Office of Medical Examiner are investigating the death, as required by law.
“OCME will determine a cause of death, and their eventual report, including any relevant toxicological results, will be a public record,” Deen said in an email.
Moore was incarcerated after he was convicted of drug charges in July, according to court records.
In June 2023, the sheriff’s office reported that Moore was a passenger in a car that was pursued as part of a drug investigation in the town of Brunswick. Moore bailed out of the vehicle and was captured after a foot chase. He was carrying a bag containing approximately $60,000 worth of Oxycodone, marijuana, MDMA, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said, along with drug paraphernalia, including precursors for manufacturing drugs. The driver, who has never been identified, also jumped from the moving car.
