The driver who led officers from multiple agencies on a high speed chase in September faces more charges.
Claude Jarrett Jr., 47, of Longs, S.C., was arrested Wednesday on multiple traffic offenses and a larceny charge. His bond was set at $3,500.
The sheriff’s office reported that deputies were operating a checking station at Joe Brown Highway and O.L. Coleman on Sept. 14 when Jarrett approached the officers around 12:50 a.m. Jarrett was traveling toward Chadbourn, and failed to produce a driver’s license. He then made a “sudden U-Turn” and fled toward U.S. 701 at a high rate of speed.
Three deputies began pursuing the silver BMW, which turned out to be bearing the tag of a stolen Jeep Cherokee.
At U.s. 701 and Complex Street in Tabor City, Jarrett paused briefly before taking off again at a high rate of speed. The chase went down several streets and roads, eventually crossing into South Carolina, where Horry County Police joined in. The car stopped near Highways 66 and 9 in Horry County. Jarrett jumped from the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, carrying a blue bag, the report said. He was captured a short time later.
Deputies found a plastic bag containing what appeared to be crystal methamphetamine in the car. Jarrett did not have a valid license, and was also wanted on unrelated charges. His BMW was seized under the “Run and Done” law, which confiscates some vehicles used in crimes.
Jarrett was served with additional warrants Tuesday while in custody.
