The Good News for October 25, 2024

Saturday is the N.C. Yam Festival in Tabor City. There are vendors, food trucks, games and activities for the kids, a car show and much more in downtown Tabor City today. You can catch the parade live on the Columbus County News Facebook page with color commentary by Darrell Jackson if you can’t get there in person.

Lake Waccamaw’s ever-popular Safe Night is from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Elizabeth Brinkley Park. Look for lots of treats, free food, facepainting, games and so much more at the county’s largest trunk or treat event. Everyone is welcome.

Hallsboro is going to be a busy place today – there’s the Hallsboro community fall festival and trunk or treat from 5-8 p.m. at Bogue Park. Hallsboro Church of God is holding trunk or treat from 6-8 p.m., and Hallsboro Baptist Church Church will have trunk or treat and the chili cookoff from 6-8 p.m.

Western Prong Baptist Church will host Trunks of Treats at 821 South Madison Street in downtown Whiteville Sunday from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. There will be food, music. Tom’s Coffee truck, and more. Everyone is welcome.

 Chadbourn Baptist Church will host Trunk or Treat Sunday from 5-7 p.m. There will be games, barrel train rides, facepainting, a photo booth, hayride and much more.

 Scout Troop 507 will host a fall carnival at the Veterans Memorial Park Monday at 6:30 p.m. There will be food, games and more. The park is located on U.S. 701 South of Whiteville.

The Whiteville Police are sponsoring trick or treat at the Municipal Building on Madison from 6-8 p.m. on Halloween.

The Waccamaw Siouan Tribe will also have trunk or treat at the tribal grounds from 6-9 the same day.

Southeastern Community College and the Chadbourn Hearts will hold trunk or treat at the college from 5-8 p.m. on Halloween.

He Nightmare on Franklin Street is back this year in Whiteville. You can enjoy the Tunnel of Terror beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Halloween. Visitors are asked for a donation of $1 to $5, with all proceeds going to Samaritan’s Purse. The Tunnel of Terror can be found at 415 S. Franklin Street.

Donations are still being accepted for victims of Hurricane Helene, although the needs lists have become a bit more tailored of late. General donations can be dropped off at any Black’s Tire location. The Black’s distribution center in the former Quality Ford on Madison in Whiteville needs volunteers to help pack and sort.

The Columbus Baptist Association office is currently only accepting monetary donations to help fund operations.  Contact the Columbus Baptist Association for more information.

The Sheriff’s Office is accepting donations at McArthur Supply in Chadbourn. Warm clothes, blankets, socks, heaters, gloves, and cash for heaters are needed. Call 910.654.4615 for information.

Willing Vessel and RealWorld Outdoors are setting up a feeding station in Spruce Pine and Bakersville this weekend. The Tabor City men expect to hand out 2,000 meals on what is their third trip west. In addition to meals, Willing Vessel is teaming up with Patton Outreach Church of Missouri to deliver 100 heaters that were purchased with donations. David Vernon Watts of Willing Vessel said they expect to make several more trips west through December.

Shelter Dog Alliance moved another vanload of dogs from the Columbus County Animal Shelter this week. The volunteer organization has been staying busy moving dogs from overwhelmed shelters in the past several months.

Remember the Columbus County Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. today. You can find everything from local produce to fresh farm eggs, arts and crafts, handmade local jewelry and candles. The market is on Government Complex Drive in North Whiteville.

It’s almost turkey shoot season again. Starting Nov. 1, Transformation Church and Milk Before Meat Ministries will host their shoot every Friday and Saturday night at 6 p.m. at 9955 James B. White Highway South starting at 6 p.m. Hot dogs and drinks will be available for purchase. Cost is $5 per shot, with all proceeds going to the church building fund. Remember to let us know when and where your non-profit, church or civic group is having a shoot, so we can put it on our list.
