Livestock are literally roaming free in the areas hit hard by Hurricane Helene last week, and the state is asking for help corralling the animals.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler issued an urgent plea this morning for donations of fencing supplies for livestock producers in Western North Carolina. The request came after the state set up a hay and donation portal at ncagr.gov for hay, forage and feed donations.
Thousands of acres of pasturage, tons of hay and other livestock necessities were destroyed in last week’s flooding. Some pastures will not be able to be used for upwards of a year, due to polluted runoff.

Social media groups used by members of the horse community are reporting that some farms are euthanizing horses and other livestock duets a lack of even low-grade edible forage.

“We have seen time and time again our agriculture community support one another in times of need, and this is no different,” said Troxler. “We are seeing an outpouring of support with hay, animal feed, fencing and other supplies that are going out to those needing these resources.

“In the days ahead, we know we are going to need even more fencing supplies, especially solar fence chargers to help livestock producers. If you have resources to donate, please go to our website to let us know.”

The direct link to the Disaster Hay and Livestock Assistance Portal is https://go.ncsu.edu/livestockdisasterhelp. The form asks if you need help or want to help. To donate click on the ‘Want to Help’ button, then you will be asked for contact information and items you have to donate.

Various donation collection sites have been set up in and around Western North Carolina. For a list of these sites that are being continuously updated, go to: https://www.ncagr.gov/emergency-programs/disaster-information/agsupplydonation
