Weather Update – Thursday November 28, 2024

Good evening and Happy Thanksgiving. Meteorologist Christopher Cawley here with your weather update for Thanksgiving night, Thursday November 28, 2024.

We have enjoyed our final 70+ degree day for the foreseeable future. Cold air will start pushing into the county on Friday, and become locked in place on Saturday.

Friday will feature full sunshine and temperatures just a shade below where they should be this time of year. Modified Arctic air pushes in once the sun goes down Friday. Bundle up if you’re going to Legion Stadium Friday because temps will drop into the upper 30s by the time the game ends… bottoming out in the upper 20s to around 30 by sunrise on Saturday.

Super dry air in place for Saturday. There will be nary a cloud in the sky as dewpoint values drop into the teens Saturday afternoon. We’ll be lucky if we reach the 50-degree-mark on Saturday. Radiational cooling Saturday night, temps will plunge into the mid and upper 20s by sunrise on Sunday.

Meteorological winter begins on December 1st, and it’s sure going to feel that way. A dry cold front moves through on Sunday, with a secondary push of Arctic air. We may briefly pop into the lower 50s Sunday afternoon ahead of the front, and that’ll be the last of the 50-degree temps until at least Wednesday.

Temps at the bus stop early Monday will be in the mid 20s. Fortunately the winds should be light to calm, so wind chill values won’t be much lower. Highs Monday and Tuesday will struggle to the middle and upper 40s. Monday night should be the coldest of the period with sunrise temps early Tuesday in the lower 20s… I wouldn’t be surprised to see readings as low as 18-20 north/west of Whiteville.

Slow moderation in temps begins Wednesday through the end of the week. We should be back up to “normal” (upper 50s/around 60) by Thursday and Friday. Longer-range modeling suggests another dry front by next weekend, but that appears questionable right now.

No precipitation is expected through at least next Thursday. In fact, we probably won’t even see any clouds in the sky from later Friday afternoon through Sunday as desert-dry air gets locked in place.

If you want to see any snow, you’ll have to travel up to the Tug Hill of New York, where 30-50 inches is expected. None here, though, just cold, dry conditions.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for supporting Columbus County News. Exercise a little grace with the Black Friday shopping… the prospect of a cheap TV isn’t worth stampeding others.  Better yet, shop local on Saturday!   Anyway, have a wonderful Friday, and take care.
