News Briefs for December 31, 2024 – New Years Eve
Tonight is New Year’s Eve, and if you feel inclined to drive after celebrating – don’t. The state’s Booze It and Lose It campaign is underway. Highway Patrol and local law enforcement are conducting sobriety checkpoints on both major and secondary roads to cut down on impaired driving. If you have indulged too much, please catch a ride. Don’t be in the headlines tomorrow.
A Whiteville man shot and killed himself during a standoff with the sheriff’s office Monday night. Multiple agencies responded after the man reported fired a shot at a deputy who was asked by family members to check on the victim.
Trooper Anthony Godwin passed away today while hunting in Hyde County. The Master Trooper with the Highway Patrol was stationed in Columbus County.
Someone fired multiple shots into a home and vehicles on Clyde Norris Road Monday. No one was injured, but the sheriff’s office said damages were in excess of $6,000.
The sheriff’s office and Animal Protective Services were called about an alleged case of animal abuse Christmas Eve. A woman reported that she was prevented from retrieving two dogs from her previous residence on Christie Road, and a man she knows intentionally allowed one of the dogs to kill another dog. The case is under investigation.
