There’s nothing unlucky about Columbus County on this Friday the 13th. Here are some of the happier happenings going on in our community as we get closer to Christmas.
The Fair Bluff Christmas Tree Lighting and Parade is Saturday. Santa will be stopping by the visitor’s center from 4-5:30 p.m. for pictures with the kids. Festivities start at the Fair Bluff Visitor’s Center at 5:30 pm with tree lighting, followed by the parade at 6 p.m.
Two big Christmas events are Saturday in Whiteville. Gurganous Farm Store will be hosting a flock swap and livestock sale from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Columbus County Farmers Market annual Christmas From The Heart sale is Saturday, featuring one of a kind gifts from local artisans. The market will also host a tack swap, so if you have spare saddles, horse gear or other accessories, bring them to the free swap and sale. The market is located on Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.
In what has become a tradition, Santa Claus will visit one of the county’s oldest businesses for some holiday cheer Saturday (Dec. 14). Pierce and Co. in Hallsboro will host the jolly old elf from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. This year he’ll have some company – Mrs. Claus, the Grinch, some elves and even the reindeer.
Tabor City and Whiteville had their big Christmas events last week. Winners in the Tabor City Chamber decorating contest were The Todd House, Ooh La La boutique, and Consumer’s Choice Insurance. Ron and Kiki Jarmuth won the residential category.
In Whiteville, Priscilla Hinson went all out, as always, winning the top prize for Sugar and Spice Dancewear in the downtown decorating contest. Be sure to check out her storefront on Madison. Kenwood Royal’s Christmas decorations have been famous for 50-plus years, and he was recognized for his decorations this year.
For the parade entries, Simply Dance won best in show. Jess Hill and the clerk of courts office staff won for Most Creative for their “Don’t Stop Believing in Christmas” themed float.
The veterans memorial park is hosting a turkey shoot every Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the park. All proceeds go to the community center project.
The Columbus Baptist Association will host Meet Me in The Alley in downtown Whiteville on Dec. 20 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Enjoy Christmas music, smores, cookies, giveaways and the Christmas story. The free event is sponsored by Crossroads, Pleasant Plains WMU, and Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist churches.
Our Good Samaritan this week is Tiffany Buzzerio of Whiteville. Tiffany is one of the hardest working ladies around, and this time of year, she’s working even harder. She heads up a toy drive that helps more than 100 children every year.
Because of Hurricane Helene, donations have been down this year, and she is looking for any additional help. If you’d like to sponsor a child, or even just fill one wish on a Christmas list, see this story at Columbuscountynews.com and contact Miss Tiffany. This is just another example of the quality of folks we have in our community.
