Bladen County confirmed a raccoon on Sholar Road is the first rabies case of the year. The deceased animal was revived by Animal Control and sent to the state lab for testing. The Health department did not say if any other animals were exposed to the raccoon.
State law requires all dogs, cats and ferrets over three months of age be vaccinated against rabies.
Columbus County has had no confirmed cases of rabies so far this year.
