The new Lake Waccamaw roundabout project at N.C. 214 (Sam Potts Highway) and Chaunceytown Road got underway Monday.
The roundabout will eventually replace the current intersection that has stopsigns at Chaunceytown and Flemington Drive.
The N.C. Dept. of Transportation said the first part of the project, improving stormwater drainage, will last through next week. The new drains require the closure of several parts of the intersection at different times.
Detours will be marked daily, the NCDOT said.
From Monday (Jan. 13) through Wednesday (Jan. 15) of this week, N.C. 214 is closed from the Pit Stop driveway to Chaunceytown. Traffic can still use Chaunceytown, Flemington, and N.C. 214 east of the crossroads.
Flemington Drive south of N.C. 214 to Church Street will close Thursday (Jan. 16) and Friday (Jan. 17). Flemington will still be open south of Church, and Chaunceytown and N.C. 214 will be open.
All four roads should be open Jan. 18-19.
On Jan. 20, N.C. 214 east of the Chaunceytown Road intersection will close. Hill’s Shopping Center will still be accessible from the east. N.C. 214 will be open east of the shopping center and west of the intersection, Chaunceytown will be open to the north and south, and Flemington will be open. That closure will remain in place until Jan. 24.
The construction is expected to last three to six months, depending on the weather, the NCDOT said. The roundabout will differ from those in Whiteville in that it will be single-lane, with Flemington entering in from the south.
The intersection will, not be completely closed to traffic, but drivers are urged to slow down and pay attention to flagmen and signs.
