Update: The sheriff’s office said today (Jan 28) that the owner of the animals has purchased appropriate shelters and the animals are now housed in compliance with state law. Deputies are checking on the property again later this week.
Animal Protective Services personnel and law enforcement found a dead cat and dogs without adequate shelter during last week’s subfreezing temperatures.
APS was called to Pond Drive in Cerro Gordo just after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, the report said. Snow was falling and temperatures were in the 20s at the time.
Deputy V. Lancaster reported that several dogs were in outdoor pens, and in some cases their only shelter were “torn tarps.” A cat was found dead in a crate outside the fence, the report said.
The owner of the property was contacted, and advised of the conditions. The woman immediately began bringing the conditions up to the law, the report said.
APS will return to the property to monitor compliance, the report said. Because the property owner immediately began improving conditions for the remaining animals, no charges have been filed.
