A Whiteville High student was arrested Monday after allegedly bringing a handgun to school in his backpack. The sheriff’s office said there was no evidence the student planned to use the weapon. Tyquan Dreshaun Davis, 18, was held on a single charged of possession of a firearm on school grounds.

High winds Friday and Saturday downed some trees in the area, as well as ushering in some badly needed rains. While there was no severe weather in Columbus County, Nakina firefighters were called out to clear a large tree that blocked Walter Todd Road near Pine Level Road. The falling pine caused power outages through that community. No injuries were reported.

The committee on American Indian affairs is also discussing a bill that would allow any member of a recognized tribe in the state to hunt, fish and trap on tribal land without a license. While that bill would not immediately affected members of the Lumbee and Waccamaw tribes, federal recognition could affect whether the Lumbee people would require licenses on land recognized as tribal. The bill would not allow hunting or other activities off tribal lands without a license.
