In his budget proposal yesterday, Gov. Josh Stein calls for a $4 billion school construction bond. He previously touted the bond referendum in in his state of the state address on March 12. Stein said overcrowded classrooms, use of trailers, security, and aging infrastructure in public schools call for the state to take on the debt. Statewide, public school enrollment is down three percent since 2020, and alternative enrollments and homeschooling have grown.
A North Whiteville woman called 911 after she was allegedly threatened by four suspects who followed her car, tried to force her off the road and threw cigarette butts at her. The victim contacted the sheriff’s office March 16, and said the suspects harassed her from Chadbourn to her home. At one point one of the suspects brandished a gun in her direction, the report said. The investigation is continuing.
Whiteville Police are urging drivers to remove valuables from vehicles and lock your doors. Police are investigating a string of car break-ins and several thefts of vehicles in recent weeks. Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call 642.5111.
