Fire Station Damaged in Blaze Monday

A Nakina Volunteer Fire Department fire engine that had recently returned from the South Carolina wildfires was destroyed in a fire of its own Monday.
The engine was involved in an accident the day prior while crews were assisting Horry County firefighters, Chief Victor Jacobs said in a press release.
“Thankfully no personnel were injured during the collision or the subsequent fire,” Jacobs said.
Tabor City and Nakina fire departments were called to the Pireway substation at 4:28 p.m., Jacobs said.
Heavy smoke was visible when they arrived, and crews immediately called for mutual aid. Brunswick, Grissettown, Williams Township, Longwood, Waccamaw and Lake Waccamaw responded, along with the sheriff’s office and Highway Patrol.
Firefighters immediately entered the building on arrival, the release said, and discovered flames and heavy smoke in the engine and passenger compartments of the truck. A second vehicle, Tanker 29, also sustained “significant” damage.
Jacobs said quick work prevented serious damage to the entire station.
“I would like to personally extend my gratitude to all the responders who came to our aid during this critical event,” he wrote. “The quick and coordinated effort from all involved have been nothing short of remarkable. I am also asking that our members and our paid staff are kept in your prayers in the coming days.
“I want to reassure the community that we have emergency plans in place and are working diligently to ensure that we continue to provide the level of service our residents expect and deserve,” he said.
