Columbus County Commissioners Monday approved a plan to charge municipalities 3% of the tax value for every tax bill serviced by the county. County Manager Eddie Madden said Whiteville and Tabor City had offered to pay a flat rate, but all other towns in the county agreed to a rate of two and a half percent. Commissioners instead voted for the higher rate, which is consistent with neighboring counties. If all local towns sign on to the plan, it will generate $166,000 a year for the county. Commissioners will hold a budget workshop May 19 to discuss a multi-million dollar gap between budget requests and budget cuts instructed by the commissioners. County manager Eddie Madden told the board Monday that the difference has been cut to nine million from the original $23 million. Madden noted that while the county must pass its budget by June 30, a minimum of a draft budget must be reviewed by the local government commission by June 19.
