Increasing Fire Danger Today Through Weekend

High temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions led the National Weather Service to issue yet another wildfire warning today (April 15).

The state is currently in an extended drought, with Columbus County split between Moderate and Severe Drought conditions. No significant  rainfall is expected for the next week, and the entire area is currently under a major rainfall deficit.

No outdoor burning is permitted for any reasons under the current burn ban. Intentionally lighting a fire can result in a citation, court costs, fines and suppression costs.

The state Drought Monitor will issue its newest update Thursday, and conditions are actually expected to worsen over the next seven to ten days.

As of this morning, 57 fires were burning or being monitored statewide. The Rosindale fire, which began April 9 near the Bladen County line, continues to be the largest fire in the state, at 742 acres. The fire is currently 60 percent contained.

Smoke from the Rosindale fire led local officials to issue air quality advisories last week. A large fire in South Carolina is also sending smoke across t Southeastern North Carolina.
