A possible tornado touched down in Riegelwood and Delco this afternoon.
County Commissioner Laverne Coleman said McPherson’s Acme Home Supply and multiple homes were damaged. No injuries have been reported.
Videos of what appeared to be a funnel cloud were shared via social media just after 4 p.m. Meteorologist Christopher Cawley said based on radar and video footage, the storm likely did produce a tornado as opposed to a downburst or inline winds.
Cawley said that the National Weather Service has not yet confirmed that the damage was caused by a tornado, but all indications point to a twister.
The rotating storm was spawned by a single, small, isolated thunderstorm first reported by firefighters in the Green Swamp. The storm touched down in the Acme-Riegelwood area, then dissipated shortly after crossing into Brunswick County.
Acme Delco Riegelwood Fire Rescue Chief Steve Carlin said debris caused a propane line to break at McPherson’s, causing a major propane leak. ADR crews foamed the tank until it could be closed off. A crew from the propane company is in scene making repairs and securing the tank.
Debris from McPherson’s was scattered across Crumley Road. Trees were pushed into homes and power lines broken on Delco School Road.
Camlin said homes at 1157 and 1225 Fertilizer Road sustained major roof damage.
During the storm, ADR crews responded to an ATV crash involving serious injuries in East Arcadia. Columbus County deputies helped provide crowd control at that scene.
