Community gatherings, resource information opportunities, and the Sheepdog Foundation’s fifth annual Cookout 4 Cops are all on the agenda for the next couple of weeks. If your looking for something to see or do, or if you’re willing to volunteer some time for a good cause in Columbus County during May, there are plenty events planned to keep you busy through the spring.

Tabor City had a big turnout for their annual bass tournament at Lake Tabor this past weekend. Kent Brewer took home third place will his 11-pound fish, Harvey McDonald and Tom Elliot came in second place, and Matt Garrell and Trevor Norris won both the first-place prize and the Biggest Bass bragging rights.
The Sheepdog Foundation will host their annual Cookout 4 Cops during National Police Week on May 14. Active Law Enforcement Officers of Columbus County, on or off duty, are welcome from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. for a free lunch on the organization. This also includes essential department staff as well.
Sheepdog will also have to-go plates on standby for those who need to fill up and roll out. Citizens wanting to attend and show your love and support for local heroes may purchase a meal for a $12 donation.

Bolton Senior Center will have a jelly making class on Friday, May 15, at 1 p.m. The hands-on class will teach the basics of jelly making while using fresh ingredients. You get to make your own batch to take home and learn tips, tricks, and recipes in great company.
Space is limited, so drop by the center located at 15354 Sam Potts Highway to reserve your spot. All supplies will be provided.
The Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum will have their annual Lunch at the Lake fundraiser at Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church on May 15 at 11:30 a.m. There will be raffles, door prizes, a best hat contest, and a best vest contest.
Tickets are $25 per person, and you can purchase yours at the depot Wednesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. or by calling 910.770.6017. The church can be found at 506 Lake Shore Drive, and the museum is located at 203 Flemington Drive.
Everyone is invited to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office’s annual Peace Officers Memorial Service on May 15 at 11 a.m. The ceremony will remember and honor fall officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. The event will be held at 817 Washington Street in Whiteville.
Lower Cape Fear LifeCare’s Angel House in Whiteville needs donations for their Family Kitchen at the facility. These items allow for families staying with loved ones to be able to have snacks and meals during their visit.

Columbus County Schools will have a job fair on Saturday, May 16, at the CCS Central Services building from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. This event offers job seekers the opportunity to meet with recruiters, explore available positions, and learn more about careers within the district.

The We Care Ministry in Clarkton has announced their new dates and time for their community food distribution. The next open days are May 19 and June 2. The event is a first come, first serve drive thru service only, and you are asked to please remain in your vehicle. Everyone is welcome.

The Veterans Memorial Park of America will be holding their Memorial Day ceremony and annual veterans luncheon on May 22 at 11 a.m. The meal is free to vets, but those who would like to attend must preregister by May 15.

Roots of Resilience: Tribal Women Rising will be on May 23 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Women and girls of all ages are welcome to attend, and lunch will be provided at the event.
Incontinence supplies, bed pads, baby diapers, feminine hygiene products, women’s resource information, and food vouchers will be handed out to those in need. There will be craft vendors on site, and Columbus Regional Healthcare Systems and the Columbus County Health Department will be in attendance.
Alicia Freeman will lead the Talking Circle, and prizes will be handed out at the resilience gathering. The address posted for the event is 7239 Old Lake Road in Bolton.
The Columbus County Community Farmers Market has new hours of operation. The facility will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Come shop fresh and local and support vendors and farmers in our community.
The market has fresh produce, farm-fresh eggs, homemade breads, jams and jellies, local honey, fresh juices, handmade jewelry, custom tumblers, crafts, games for all ages, live music, and so much more. A food truck rodeo is scheduled for May 23. The market is located at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.
Lakeside worship services will begin Memorial Day Sunday and will run every weekend through Labor Day Sunday starting on May 24. The services are held at 9 a.m. at the Lake Waccamaw Sailing Club. Located at 3100 Canal Cove Road. A list of speakers and singers will be announced soon.
Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church will have Pentecost Sunday service on May 24 beginning at 10 a.m. This very special worship service will be followed by a covered dish lunch. Bring your favorite dish to share and celebrate with LWMC at 506 Lake Shore Drive.
Transformation Church and Milk B4 Meat Ministries and friends will have a three-day sidewalk revival on May 28-30 at 6:30 p.m. each evening in the Walmart parking lot in Whiteville. A candlelight vigil will be held on May 29 for Pastor Heath Conner as he was supposed to be the speaker that evening and unexpectedly passed away.
Pastor Buddy Seay of Beaverdam OFWB Church will preach on May 28, the vigil will be led by Pastor Jon Walton of Transformation Church on May 29, and on May 30, Evangelist Lynn Lowery will bring the word.
Iron Hill Baptist Church will be having a fish fry fundraiser on May 29 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Plates are $10 each and will include a catfish fillet, sweet potatoes, homemade cole slaw, bread, and a dessert.

Fair Bluff will have their First Saturday Market on June 6 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Come out and enjoy the Riverwalk and do some shopping with vendors, yard sellers, and artisans at Riverside Drive. While you’re in town, be sure to stop by Main Street for ‘Art in the Park’ across from the Lumber River Visitors Center.
Any and all beautiful artwork from drawings, paintings, wooden items, crafts, needlepoint, and handmade jewelry will be up for grabs. To participate in selling your pieces, be sure to comment under the post on the Fair Bluff Chamber of Commerce Facebook Page. Entry is free to both events.
