Extra security at schools due to TikTok rumor

While there have been no credible threats locally, the latest viral rumored to additional security at area schools today.

Posters on TikTok, a social media group frequented by teens and youth, said there would be shootings and violence at schools across the country today. Some schools across North Carolina have reported parents keeping students out due to the threats. The threats went viral Thursday, drawing attention in about a dozen states, including North Carolina.

Officials are being watchful at area schools, but so far it’s been business as usual.

“We have not seen any difference than what we would normally see on the last day of the semester before the Christmas break,” said Deanna Meadows of the county school system. ‘We did have extra officers available just in case.”
Marc Whichard of the Whiteville City Schools said there was no noticeable increase in absentees Friday, but officials are aware of the rumor.
“As always, we continue to monitor for concerns and review our policies and procedures to ensure the safety of our facilities,” Whichard said.

While no direct threats were reported in Columbus County, Sheriff Jody Greene said security was increased at all county schools.

“We take everything like this seriously,” he said. “It’s sad, but we have to respond. Parents need to talk to their kids about how serious this type of thing is. It’s not a joke.”

Two students in Horry County, S.C. are being questioned this morning after allegedly sharing a message about violence with other students, according to Horry County Police.

TikTok said in a statement Thursday that the company takes all threats seriously.
“We handle even rumored threats with utmost seriousness,” TikTok said, “which is why we’re working with law enforcement to look into warnings about potential violence at schools even though we have not found evidence of such threats originating or spreading via TikTok.”
