The sheriff’s office will be hosting a community emergency blood drive on May 11 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The drive will be held in the Sheriff’s office parking lot on Washington street in Whiteville. For each person that donates blood, a donation will be made to the Columbus County Baptist Association Toy Store and the National Child Safety Council. The sheriff’s office will also host a Peace Officers Memorial Service Friday at 4 p.m. The service will be held at the fallen officers memorial at the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office. The public is welcome.
A Wilmington woman is encouraging people throughout our area to show their support for law enforcement this week. Courtney Hubbard started the grassroots “Back the Blue” to, in her words, show some love for local law enforcement. You don’t have to sign up, or contact anyone. She just asks that everyone who can drop off a gift card, flowers or a goodie bag at your local law enforcement office by this Saturday, Peace Officers Memorial Day.
NCWorks and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a hiring event Tuesday, May 11, from 3-7 p.m. at Southeastern Community College, in the T building. Multiple employers will be on hand with job opportunities. Call 642.3171 for more information.
Bethel Baptist Church in Riegelwood will hold an all-day event May 16 honoring law enforcement officers and their families. Firefighters at Acme-Delco-Riegelwood added a new truck to their fleet last week. The Ford Superduty heavy rescue is designed primarily for use as an offroad pumper for wildfires and in situations where a full-size fire truck just can’t get there. Truck 127 had its graphics applied by Wild Child Grafix, and the pumper is ready for duty.
Speaking of fishing — the Waccamaw Siouan tribe is sponsoring a Community fishing camp for kids in May and June. Waccamaw Siouan STEM Studio instructors will use fishing as a science class to help kids learn more about biology and the environment For more information, email stem@waccamaw dash siouan.org. The event is sponsored by the tribe and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Registration deadline is May 17.
Columbus County Animal Protective Services is back open to the public. The shelter is also now open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Call 911 if you have an animal emergency or a possible cruelty case. You can call 641.3945 for adoptions and information.
An unusual foster animal from the Columbus County Animal Protective services Division has a new home. The lonely goose who was picked up last week has been adopted by its foster family. It’s the second bird the shelter has dealt with recently – a hen at the shelter paid her room and board. With an egg a day until she went to a new home in February.
Flowers are for sale at the Boys and Girls Home Country Store at Lake Waccamaw. Under the guidance of Buddy Kennedy in the farm’s greenhouse, residents have grown petunias, lantana, sweet potato vine and begonia that are now available for purchase. Prices vary. The store is open Friday 8 AM – 3 PM or Saturday 8 AM to noon.
The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Cadet organization meets Mondays at 6 p.m. at the sheriff’s office. The program is open to all youth ages 10-18. Call 642.6551 for more information.

All proceeds will go directly to the National Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation.
