An unwanted puppy now has a new home after being tossed from a vehicle and eventually ending up in police custody Saturday.
Whiteville Police Sgt. Brianna Blanks was on patrol Saturday when a passerby spotted her cruiser and waved for help.
“I was flagged down by someone who watched (the puppy) get thrown from a vehicle on Bud Stephens Road,” Blanks said. “The girl couldn’t keep her, and the shelter wouldn’t take her in at the time. She tried contacting a few shelters with no luck.
“Seeing me was her last resort.”

Blanks has a reputation for going the extra mile for victims of crime, and she did the same for the tri-colored, long haired mixed breed pup.
“I took her and we went shopping for a collar, a leash and some food.”
The puppy warmed quickly to Blanks, who shared her photo on Facebook with a plea for a good home that would adopt the thrown-away pup. It didn’t take long before she was contacted.
“She ended up going to a close friend of mine,” Blanks said. “They recently lost their dog, so it all worked out like it should have.”
The puppy and the police officer “hung out” for a little while until her new family arrived. Blanks said the puppy is a good fit.
“I don’t know how someone could have done that to her,” she said. “She is just so precious.”
