The Good News for Feb. 12-19

 

As we get closer to spring, more and more opportunities are coming available throughout our area. Bundle up and get outside for some fresh air, then check out everything our community has to offer.

 A tshirt and bracelet fundraiser supporting Kyla Mae Benton is set for Feb. 15 from 1-3 p.m. at the Lowes Parking lot in Whiteville. Shirts are $15 and $18. Bracelets are $3 or two for $5. Call 910.625.7724 or 910.734.1753. Kyla is recovering from injuries sustained in a car crash Jan. 6 that killed her mother, Misty Cribb.

 

It’s almost baseball season. The Wolfpack Optimist DYB showcase is March 1. Registration ends Feb. 22. Contact Jonathan Soles at 910.234.5906 to sign up.

Framing went up this week for the first building at the Veterans Memorial Park of America south of Whiteville. The service center will serve as a meeting room, social center and a stop for the Veterans Administration mobile service unit.

Movies are coming back at the Museum of Science in downtown Whiteville. Wall-E will be shown March 1 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the museum theater. There’s no cost. Drinks and snacks will be available. There will be opportunities for hands-on learning after each showing. The movie series is sponsored by International Paper.

Michael and Alecia Myrie of the Sheepdog Foundation are petitioning the state to officially recognize June 12 as Women Veteran Recognition Day. They are gathering signatures for a petition to submit to our state representatives. They are hosting the first annual Women Veteran Appre-SHE-ation Picnic in June 2025, and a Combat Female Veterans Day celebration in May. Dates and further details will be announced.

Our hometown heroes this week are the organizers for the Tim Tebow Night to Shine. This year saw one of the largest crowds yet for the all-volunteer effort. Night to Shine give special needs people the opportunity to enjoy a high school prom of their very own, complete with music, dancing, carriage rides and much more. This event is always a massive undertaking, but the smiles on the faces of the honored guests are worth every bit of effort. thank you to everyone at Western Prong Baptist Church as well as all those in the community who donated or turned out to help.

Southern Farm Days is coming up the third weekend in March. The 15th annual festival features and celebrates all things rural and historical. Organizers have made some changes this year to keep the event interesting. Look for more on Southern Farm Days in the coming weeks.

The Columbus Baptist Association Spring Revival is set for March 10-13 at Hallsboro Baptist Church, 551 Hallsboro Rd. South. Guest speakers will be Rev. Joshua Connor of Pleasant Plains Baptist; Rev. Phil Addison of Bolton Baptist; Rev. Ryan Edwards of Clarendon Baptist, and Dr. George Strickland of Cerro Gordo Baptist. There will be special music each night.
