CCSO Warns of Fake Court Notice Texts

Some Columbus County residents are receiving notices about toll and traffic violations in a scam that’s making the rounds, according to the sheriff’s office.

The text messages contain a realistic notice claiming to be from the Wake County courts, demanding immediate payment for an “outstanding violation.”

The text message appears to be an official document, but the CCSO says it is a scam.

The text claims that driver’s license may be suspended and “maximum statutory fines, late penalties and additional court costs” will be levied. The text offers a QR code that can be scanned to pay the full amount.

“Court officials and the sheriff’s office will never request sensitive financial information via text or email,” the sheriffs office said in a press release.

Recipients should not click on any links or QR codes, or send any money.

For more information, contact the sheriff’s office or clerk of court.
