Summer days are winding down, but a season of festivities is in full swing in the county. There’s even something for the little guys out there.

• Speaking of little guys, congratulations are in order for ten-year-old Wes Crutchfield of Greensboro. He was this year’s winner of the Jennie Stocks Youngest Swimmer Award for Take the Lake 2021. He is also the overall winner in the Take the Lake Swim Challenge.

Descendants of John McNeill kept up the family tradition of supporting three good causes on Labor Day.

• On Labor Day, the great grandchildren of John McNeill of Lake Waccamaw opened a lemonade stand on Canal Cove Road for charity. The children ranging from ages 6 months to 9 years old raised $187, but with generous customers telling the kids to “keep the change” the total reached $600. The proceeds were divided equally between the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum, the Rube McCray Library, and the Lake Waccamaw Fire Department.

• If you haven’t gotten all the school supplies you need for your back to schoolers, there will be a giveaway at the Bolton Senior Center tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon from 4:30 – 6:45 p.m. The event is sponsored by Karen Flood of Emergency Charitable Services. For additional information, please call 910.742.1881 or 910.398.7154.

• Does your little one love a good book? Every second Saturday of the month, you can bring the kiddos by the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences to have Storytime from 10 – 11 a.m. Admission is free, and the museum is located at 415 South Madison St., Whiteville. For more information, email Meredith Morgan at whiteville@naturalsciences.org.

• It’s not too late to enter the Celebrate the Holidays Downtown Whiteville Raffle. Tickets are $2 and can be purchased at the Columbus County Arts Council, the Columbus County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, or at Lee Lee’s at Madison and Main. The prizes are a Southern Tide Yeti Cooler donated by Lee Lee’s, and a Wine, Dine, and Stay package donated by Cape Fear Winery.

• Celebrate Recovery’s new location is at Western Prong Baptist Church every Monday evening. At 6 p.m. sharp, a free homemade dinner is served, and meetings start at 7 p.m. Celebrate Recovery is a 12-step program geared toward those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. People struggling with anxiety, codependence, compulsive behaviors, eating disorders, gambling addiction, and sex addiction are also welcomed to attend meetings. The church is located at 167 Peacock Rd., Whiteville.
