100-mph Chase Goes from Bladen to Columbus

A high speed chase that began in Bladenboro ended near the Columbus County line Tuesday.

Bladen Sheriff James McVicker reported that Bladenboro Police tried to stop a silver BMW operated by Dylan Blake Burnette, and the vehicle fled down Center Road. A deputy with the community Impact Team (CIT) was in the area and observed the BMW traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour near Cabbage Road, according to a press release.

The BMW headed back into Bladenboro, where deputies lost track of the car.

“The perseverance of the deputies and Bladenboro Police Department Officers continued and a Bladenboro Police Officer was able to locate suspect vehicle again at North Carolina Highway 410 and Highway 242,” the press release said.

The BMW then headed toward Chadbourn on N.C. 410 at a high rate of speed. Columbus deputies, the Highway Patrol and Chadbourn Police were alerted and headed toward the county line.

Deputies deployed a tire deflation device, which slowed the car. Burnette lost control and crashed into a tree, then fled on foot. He was apprehended by Bladen deputies.

Burnette was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving while license revoked, careless and reckless driving, resisting an officer, fictitious plates, failure to register a vehicle and speeding. He was held under a secoured bond of $7,500.

“The quick response and cooperation of the Chadbourn Police Department, Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol was pivotal in the apprehension of this fleeing suspect,” McVicker said in the press release.
