The “Gentle Giant” of the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office has retired.

Major Bobby Faulk officially retired Friday after nearly 30 years in law enforcement in Columbus County. Faulk started as a road deputy and worked for CCSO for all but a short period when he was with Whiteville Police.

“Bobby would be the first major that our Sheriff’s Office has ever had as traditionally the Chief Deputy served as the chief and the major in the past,” Sheriff Jody Greene said in a Facebook post. “Major Faulk was known as the gentle giant and is loved by all at our office as he stood with dignity and honor.”

Faulk was escorted home by a large contingent of well-wishers and CCSO personnel Friday, and made the traditional last radio call from his driveway.

“Major Faulk contributed many hours, blood, sweat, and tears to the law enforcement profession in the county,” Greene wrote. “We were so thankful to work beside him and thankful to his family for allowing us to borrow him. We were able to return him to his family today unharmed after three decades of service.”
