Columbus County officials cut the ribbon today (Tuesday) ion the former BB&T Campus in downtown Whiteville, making the facility the “official” home for county offices.

Most county services have been consolidated in the former main bank branch and the office building for more than a year. The county purchased the property after BB&T was sold to Truist, and the bank built a new headquarters on J.K. Powell Boulevard.

State Rep. Brenden Jones shared the ceremonial scissors with Commission chair Ricky Bullard. Jones helped secure some of the funding to purchase then retrofit the two buildings.

In addition to the administrative offices in the “Mirror Building” — the largest and tallest structure in Whiteville — the county purchased the iconic main branch building that faces Madison Street. The white stucco building is considered a significant architectural site in the state, and is thought to be the only building of its specific design in North Carolina. The former main branch houses Economic Development, a pay station for all county fees, the small business incubator and other services.
