Those heavy rains forecast for today changed some plans for Easter egg hunts across the county. There is still a lot to do in Columbus over the next few days.
The hunts at Williams Township and Chadbourn Depot will still be held Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Riegelwood Community Park hunt has been rescheduled for Sunday (March 24) at 3 p.m. The hunt at Old Dock Community Park is also set for Sunday at 3 p.m.
Egg hunts at Tabor City School, West Columbus School, Lake Waccamaw-Elizabeth Brinkley Park, Hallsboro Community Park, and the Bolton Community Park will be March 30 at 10 a.m. The Tabor School Colts PTO Spring Festival will still be held Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
At Farmers Union, the hunt at Spaulding Park has been rescheduled for April 1 at 10 a.m.
The hunt at Whiteville Parks and Recreation has been cancelled.
There will be a candlelight vigil for young Antonio Maultsby Jr. Monday at 7 p.m. at the Chadbourn Depot. Police chief Ken Elliot, Chadbourn councilwoman Colene Kelly, and Rev. Jerry Ganus will speak. Donations will be accepted for the family.
Friends and family of Brandon McDonald will mark the third anniversary of his disappearance today in Laurinburg. The Clarkton man disappeared March 23, 2021. His truck was later found near Laurinburg. The service will be held at Bethel Living Ministries, 17201 Old Lumberton Road, Laurinburg at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome.
Columbus Animal Protective Services will be at Chic-fil-A in Wilmington TODAY from 2 until 5 p.m. with adoptable dogs and cats from the shelter.
The Columbus Community Farmers Market is open today and every Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Local produce, meat, eggs and dairy products will be for sale, along with arts and crafts, plants and more. The market is located on Government Complex Drive in North Whiteville.
Olyphic Original Free Will Baptist Church will hold an egg hunt today from 3-6 p.m. On March 31, there will be a sunrise service at 7 a.m., followed by breakfast and the regular service at 10 a.m. The church is located at 16213 Swamp Fox Highway East, Tabor City. Call 910.363.6516.
Hallsboro Church of God will host a special Palm Sunday service at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Everyone is welcome. The church is located on Dupree Landing Road in Hallsboro.
The Veterans Memorial Park will host an egg hunt, telling of the resurrection story, games and crafts for kids, and other activities March 30 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. All events are free. Onsite Photography will be offering photos with the Easter Bunny. The park is located at 6354 James B. White Hwy. South (U.S. 701), Whiteville.
New Life Community Church at 107 South Maultsby Street in Whiteville will have their Easter cantata Sunday, March 24 at 6 p.m. and also an Easter Sunrise Service March 31 at 6:30 a.m. The Easter service will include communion, a singing service, and regular morning worship at 10:30 a.m.
Forest Lawn Baptist Church will present The King is Coming on Saturday and Sunday from 6 through 8:30 p.m. Reservations can be made at https://forestlawnbaptist.wixsite.com/worship/event-details/the-king-is-coming. Choose your time and make a reservation. The church is located on U.S. 701 in Tabor City.
Bess Hinson Taylor’s exhibit of her songbird art can be seen at Columbus County Arts Council on Madison Street in downtown Whiteville. The exhibit lasts through May 30. There will be children’s activities and informational programs from the Southeastern Swamp Stewards and the Museum of Natural Science throughout the exhibit. The gallery is free.
While cats and birds traditionally don’t mix very well, you can learn more about Boopers the Bad Cat at a book signing at the Arts Council Saturday.
Local author Sadie Leder Elder will read from her latest children’s book about the mischief making cat. There will be art activities for the kids, signed copies of Booper’s adventures for purchase, and a reading from the book. Boopers’ big day at the Arts council is from 3-5 p.m. March 23. The arts council is located at 822 South Madison street, Whiteville.
Whiteville Rotary Club celebrated its 100th birthday March 21 at Vineland Station in downtown Whiteville. Clubmembers reminisced about Rotary’s role in the community, and got the first look at a special booklet, 100 years of Whiteville Rotary, published by Fuller Royal. Appropriately, 100 people turned out for the 100th birthday party.
Speaking of centenarians, Mrs. Mary Mintz of Lake Waccamaw was honored this week at the presbyterian church with her own reserved parking place. Miss Mary will be 106 years old in the coming days. We wish her the very best.
A new Alcoholics Anonymous chapter is starting March 22 at the Bolton Youth and Senior Center, 15354 Sam Potts Highway. Doors open at 8 p.m. After next week, the chapter will meet every Friday at the center.
The fourth annual Yah-Shoo-Nay Fish Camp is set for April 12-13. Kids can learn about fishing, the role fish play in the ecosystem, the historical role of fishing with the Waccamaw Siouan people, and more. The event is free. Snacks and equipment are provided for young anglers at no charge. Register at stemstudio.waccamaw-siouan.org.
Southeastern Swamp Stewards will sponsor Lunch Trivia for adults starting in April. The event is a partnership between the Stewards, the Museum of Science, and Penn’s Grill. Look for more on the event on the Swamp Stewards Facebook Page.

Vietnam Veterans Day is Friday. The Traveling Wall will be here Friday and Saturday of next week. Saturday there will be free hot dogs and drinks, exhibits, an original Vietnam era jeep that actually was used during the war, and more at the Veterans Building, 1028 S. Madison Street, Whiteville from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m..
