Dash cam footage led to two suspects facing charges for allegedly throwing rocks at moving cars, causing thousands of dollars in damages.

Cameron Austin Rockwell, 24 and a 17 year old juvenile male allegedly threw rock at multiple vehicles along Strawberry Boulevard, Haynes Lennon highway and U.S. 74 Sunday, a report said. Rockwell is held under $150,000 secured bond on four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two charges of property damage. His address was listed in jail documents as 245 Singletary Rd. Whiteville.

A juvenile petition has been sought against the teenager for the same charges.

The sheriff’s office reported that a woman called 911 July 19 after someone thew a rock and broke her windshield on Joe Brown Highway near Chadbourn. She went to a convenience store and called 911. Her dash camera caught the vehicle, but she could not identify the occupants.

On July 21, deputies responded to two similar calls in Cerro Gordo around the same time.  One call was on Haynes Lennon Highway, while the other was on Andrew Jackson highway Southwest. Deputies recovered rocks similar to those found in the first victim’s vehicle.

A car matching the one seen in the original dash cam footage was spotted on Joe Brown Highway, and Rockwell and the teenager were questioned, the report said.

“Inside the vehicle, large rocks were discovered, matching the type used in the property damage,” the report said.

Both suspects denied involvement, but the report said the teenager eventually confessed.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact the sheriff’s office.
