Multiple fire departments were called to a structure fire that claimed the life of a Roseland woman Wednesday.

Columbus County Fire Marshal Shannon Blackman said the fire was spotted at 8347 Old Stake Road by a passerby and called in around 7:57 a.m.

Smoke was coming from the gables on each end of the home, Blackman said.

“The fire was in the attic space,” he said. “The ceiling collapsed inside the home.”

The elderly woman was found by firefighters, Blackmon said. The doublewide manufactured home was a total loss.

Tabor City Fire Chief Jeff Fowler was transported from the scene to Seacoast Hospital with chest pains, Blackman said.

The fire marshal and the State Bureau of Investigation are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Responding stations included Roseland, Fair Bluff, Tabor City Fire and Rescue, Chadbourn Klondyke, Cerro Gordo, Whiteville, Williams Township, Loris and Horry County. The State Bureau of Investigation, Office of the State Fire Marshal, Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and Columbus Fire Marshal also responded.
