An elderly man returning from feeding animals was struck and killed on his bicycle this morning.

Trooper D. Anders of the Highway Patrol said Larry Broadwell, 73, was struck from behind around 7:30 a.m. on Arthur Collier Road near Rose Hill Road.

Broadwell was heading east on Arthur Collier when Craven Lennon, 55, approached him from behind. Lennon struck Broadwell’s bicycle in the roadway.

Anders said Broadwell was apparently heading home after feeding animals near the Lennon Cemetery.

Lennon was charged with improper passing and misdemeanor death by vehicle.

The fatality was the fifth road death in Columbus County this year.
