Whiteville first responders discovered the driver in a single car wreck Wednesday night had been shot.
Whiteville Police Chief Douglas Ipock said the call came in around 1130 p.m. A car had crashed into a utility pole in the 300 block of Madison Street. Police, Whiteville Fire and Whiteville Rescue responded.
The driver had suffered at least one gunshot wound, Ipock said and was seriously injured. He was transported to Columbus Regional and airlifted to another hospital, where he underwent surgery this morning.
This is a developing story.
