Christmas Events Start Saturday in Whiteville, Tabor City

Small Business Saturday is going to be big in downtown Whiteville.

The Shop Our Stores on Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for customers to avoid the big box stores and crowds and check out everything downtown has to offer.

Several businesses are planning special events and attractions around Small Business Saturday.

Saturday at 8 is the first ever Holiday Haber-Dash-ery fun run on Madison Street. Contestants are encouraged to wear holiday themed costumes for the free event. There will be awards for best time as well as best costumes. The run is free. Sign up online at visitcolumbuscountync.com or in person at 8 a.m. at Vineland Station.

The Real Whiteville Santa is taking time away from his workshop near the courthouse to be downtown. Santa will be available for free photos at the former Moskow’s Store between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tinsel the Elf will be at Sugar and Spice Dancewear, and the Grinch will be visiting Guyton’s Drug Store.

The Waccamaw Siouan Heritage celebration also starts Saturday at 10 a.m. with a special opening ceremony at the Museum of Science downtown. There will be traditional dancing, handmade arts and crafts and more. The event is free, and is sponsored in part by the Columbus County Arts Council.

Tabor City’s Christmas Crafts Fair is also Saturday in the Truist parking lot at Hickman Road and Live Oak Street from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Even more crafters have signed up this year than in 2023, so there will be a big selection of gift and décor items.

Tabor City will light the community Christmas tree and host its parade Thursday (Dec. 5) starting at 6 p.m. The Tinseling Tabor Bazaar will open immediately following the parade at 114 W. Fifth Street.

Lake Waccamaw will light the community Christmas tree Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. The Boys and Girls Home is also sponsoring the Christmas Nativity Journey. More than 1,000 different nativity scenes from around the world will be set up at the Boys and Girls Home, Little Wheel of Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church, and the Anchorage.

The self-guided journey is from 4-8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 7. Light refreshments will be available at the Boys and Girls Home Chapel, where there will be live music and an open house Saturday.

Saturday will also see the annual Christmas parade at Lake Waccamaw. A number of residents also participating in Light the Lake this year, decorating piers, docks and boats along the waterfront.

Dec. 7 will be the Holiday Extravaganza in downtown Whiteville. The parade will be at 6 p.m., followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree, carriage rides, a Kids Zone, pictures with Santa, food trucks, and music from the Edgewood Chorus.

Also new this year will be vendors with handmade items. A number of downtown businesses will also have extended hours for the evening.

Dec. 7 will also be the Lake Tabor Holiday Flotilla. Contact the Chamber of Commerce for information on participating.
