A Clarkton area man will serve 11 to 14 years in prison after assaulting and attempting to immolate his father.
In Bladen County Superior court Tuesday (Nov. 12), Kirby Elkins entered guilty pleas to charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, first degree burglary and attempted first degree arson. Superior Court Judge Jessica Locklear sentenced Elkins to 11.5 to 14.8 years in prison.
The District Attorney’s office said that on Aug. 25, 2023, Elkins broke into Kirby Edwards Elkins’ home off N.C. 211, and stabbed the victim. Elkins also headbutted the victim, bloodying his nose, according to testimony.
Elkins sprayed lighter fluid on the 67-year-old, but the senior Elkins managed to knock a cigarette lighter out of his hand before Elkins could start a fire.
Elkins also suffered a stab wound to the chest and a cut behind one ear during the fight with his son. Elkins was finally able to fend off the defendant with a kitchen chair and force him from the home.
Deputies found a folding knife in the kitchen in a pool of blood, according to testimony. They also discovered a gas can that Elkins left outside.
Detectives from Bladen county located Elkins at his home in New Hanover County, where he was arrested by the NHCSD and Wilmington Police.
The state was represented by Chief Assistant District Attorney Allan R. Adams. Det. Aaron Brisson with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office lead the investigation with the assistance of the Wilmington Police Department and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
