The Good News for Nov. 29

Saturday is a big day in downtown Whiteville. The Shop Our Stores on Small Business Saturday will give shoppers all kinds of alternatives to big box stores while supporting your neighbors. Tinsel the Elf will be at Sugar and Spice Dancewear, and the Grinch will be visiting Guyton’s Drug Store. The Real Whiteville Santa will be available for free photos at the former Moskow’s Store between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Waccamaw Siouan Heritage celebration also starts Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Museum of Science downtown. There will be dancing, traditional arts and crafts and more. The event is free. It’s sponsored in part by the Columbus County Arts Council.

Tabor City’s Christmas Crafts Fair is today in the Truist parking lot at Hickman Road and Live Oak Street from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Even more crafters have signed up this year than in 2023, so there will be a big selection of gift and décor items.

If you love a parade, this is going to be the week to bundle up and enjoy. Tabor City’s Parade and Christmas events start Thursday at 6 p.m. There will be the lighting of the Community Christmas tree, chicken bog bowls for sale, and much more. Don’t forget the Tinseling Tabor Bazaar right after the parade. Saturday will be the holiday flotilla on Lake Tabor at 7 p.m.

Lake Waccamaw will light their community Christmas tree Friday at 6 p.m. The Boys and Girls Home is also sponsoring the Christmas Nativity Journey. More than 1,000 different nativity scenes from around the world will be set up at the Boys and Girls Home, Little Wheel of Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church, and the Anchorage.

The self-guided journey is from 4-8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 7. Light refreshments will be available at the Boys and Girls Home Chapel, where there will be live music and an open house Saturday.

Dec. 7 will be the Holiday Extravaganza in downtown Whiteville. The parade will be at 6 p.m., followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree, carriage rides, a Kids Zone, pictures with Santa, food trucks, and music from the Edgewood Chorus.

You need to get your orders in for the East Columbus Swamp Keepers education foundation pork chop plate sale. Plates are $10 and will be available December 6 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Call or text 910.617.9056.

 Transformation Church hosts their turkey shoot every Friday and Saturday night at 6 p.m. at 9955 James B. White Highway South. Hot dogs and drinks will be available. Cost is five dollars per shot, with all proceeds going to the church building fund.

The Veterans Memorial Park will host a turkey shoot every Friday and Saturday beginning December 6 starting at 7 p.m. The shoots will be held through December 23 at the park.
