New State Laws

A number of new state laws went into effect Sunday, some without the blessing of Gov. Roy Cooper.

  • Masks are now prohibited in public except they may be worn by persons with health conditions.
  • The Department of Labor is now required to implement a training program to help hoteliers and vacation rental managers recognize signs of human trafficking.
  • Sheriffs are now required by state law to cooperate with federal immigration investigations and arrests.
  • Seriously ill patients will now be able to choose to try investigational or experimental drugs.
  • Sixteen and seventeen year olds who commit certain violent crimes will now be tried as adults.
