The Good News for Dec. 20

Santa Claus and one his more bashful elves visited Pierce and Co. Saturday to spread some holiday cheer.

It’s a busy time in Columbus County, as school is out and everyone is getting ready for Christmas. The original Whiteville Santa is open Wednesday through Saturday at Santa’s House on Smith Street in Whiteville, beside Farm Bureau. The man of the season is welcoming visitors from 3:30 until 7 p.m.

A Sweet Discovery bakery in Fair Bluff will have a visit from jolly old St. Nick on Saturday at 1 p.m. The bakery is at 1001 Main St. in Fair Bluff. Everyone is welcome to come get a sweet treat and see Santa before he heads back to the North Pole.

 A Christmas tradition for 15 years will light up the skies through Jan. 6. Since 2009, Corey Lee’s family has decorated their home at 7020 New Britton highway with what may be the largest Christmas display in the county. There are more than 50,000 lights as well as blowups and other attractions. The Leesville Show is free. The lights go on daily at 5 p.m., and shine until 11.

Willing Vessel Ministries will be hosting its annual Christmas Eve dinner from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Murf’s Pawn on Madison Street in Whiteville. If your business is open Christmas Eve, drop by or send someone from your business to pick up free plates for your entire staff. Plates will also be delivered to area nursing homes. The Columbus Baptist Association will host Meet Me in The Alley in downtown Whiteville tonight from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Enjoy Christmas music, smores, cookies, giveaways and the Christmas story. The free event is sponsored by Crossroads, Pleasant Plains WMU, and Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist churches.

New Hope Baptist Church at 7857 Old Lake Road is hosting a live nativity Sunday from 6-9 p.m. There will be a hayride food, music, fellowship and a Christmas drama. Dress warmly. Snacks, hot chocolate and coffee will be available for free. Call 910.612.0195 for more.

Monday is the last night for the Veterans Memorial Park turkey shoot. All proceeds go to the construction of the new veterans center. The park is located on US. 701 South of Whiteville. The shoot starts at 7 p.m.

Today is the deadline for James Edwards’ blanket project for western North Carolina. Edwards is collecting new or gently used blankets for distribution to Hurricane Helene victims. Blankets will be accepted at Bodyshapers in Whiteville.

 Western Prong Baptist Church will present its youth Christmas program, Sing Children Sing, Sunday at 6:30. The church is located at Peacock Road and U.S. 701 North, halfway between Clarkton and Whiteville.

Trinity Baptist Church will hold a Christmas candlelight service Dec. 22 at 6 p.m.  Trinity is located at 201 South Thompson Street, Whiteville.

Welcome PFWB Church will present its Christmas cantata Sunday at 11 a.m., and the youth play Bethlehem Express will be Sunday night at 6 p.m. Welcome is located at 3104 Old Cribbtown Road, Chadbourn.

Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church will present a children’s Christmas program Dec. 22 at 6 p.m. The church is located at 48 Crusoe Island Rd., Whiteville.

Magnolia Baptist Church will host “The Savior is Born” Dec. 23 at 6 p.m. The church is located at 1558 Crusoe Island Rd., Whiteville.

Transformation Church and Milk B4 Meat Ministries will host Christmas caroling Dec. 22 at 6 p.m. The church sponsors a turkey shoot every Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. with all proceeds going to the church building fund.

The shoot is held at 9955 James B. White Hwy. South (U.S. 701 South).

Transformation has midweek services every Wednesday at 7, followed by a covered dish supper, in the Lebanon Church fellowship hall at 9237 James B. White Hwy. South (U.S. 701). The church meets in the Lebanon fellowship hall for worship every Sunday at 10 a.m. Call 910.234.8089 for more information.

 Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church will host a Christmas Eve service Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. The church has worship services every Sunday at 9 and 11 a.m. LWMC is located at 508 Lakeshore Dr., Lake Waccamaw.

Starting January 11, Make Heaven crowded Ministries will host a communitywide ladies Bible study inside Candlewood Farms Coffee and Bakery, 721 S. Madison St. in Whiteville, across the street from Merchantile on Madison. There will be Bible study, good food, coffee and fellowship from 9-10a.m.
