Murder Defendant Charged in SCC Fight

Johnny Meares and Kason Johnson (CCSO)

The suspect in a 2022 murder was arrested after allegedly threatening to kill a woman Wednesday.

Kason Durante Johnson, 46, of 329 Carter Rd., Chadbourn, was charged with simple affray, making a threatening telephone call, and possession of marijuana. He was released on a $1,500 secured bond, according to warrants and detention center records.

Johnny Lee Meares, 41, of 678 Green’s Mill Rd., Clarkton,  was charged with simple affray and possession of a firearm on educational grounds. He was released on a $5,000 secured bond.

Warrants show that Johnson was allegedly threatening Meares’ wife Hannah when the incident occurred. Meares said the fight was due to a long-running dispute, and he was trying to defend his wife when he and Johnson began fighting.

Meares had a Glock handgun on his person at the time of his arrest, the warrant said. There was no indication that he drew the weapon.

Johnson was out on bond for the May 4, 2022 murder of Willie Lee Wheeler, 67, in his Tabor City home. Julius Tomas Stephens was charged in the same murder in May 2023.
