The State Department of Health and Human Services is urging North Carolinians to “Fight the Bite” and reduce tick and mosquito borne diseases. In 2024, more than 900 cases of tick and mosquito borne illnesses were reported statewide.
Mosquito borne diseases include West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and La Crosse. Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme and other tick borne diseases can cause fever, headache, rashes, flu-like symptoms and can be severe.
All bug borne illnesses can be easily treated with antibiotics when properly diagnosed, but delaying treatment can causes serious long term health issues.
“Vector-borne diseases are on the rise in North Carolina,” said Emily Herring, Public Health Veterinarian. “We encourage all North Carolinians to protect themselves from tick and mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and pants, using EPA-approved repellents, and checking for ticks after spending time outdoors.”
