After a student tested positive for COVID-19 at Whiteville High School last week, 13 others WHS students are in a precautionary quarantine.
Dr. Marc Whichard, superintendent for the city school system, said that after discussing the possible exposure with Columbus County Health Department, the decision was made to isolate 13 others who were “in the immediate vicinity” of the student.
“We utilize contact tracing to review every possible scenario of contact and individually notified each person and their family as to the necessary steps to be taken,” Whichard said.
The case was the second city schools student confirmed with the COVID-19 virus. An Edgewood Elementary School student was confirmed sick shortly after school started. That student’s family has also been in quarantine.
Whiteville Schools are on a split schedule for in-person instruction. Some parents opted for digital only classes for their children.
