Two people died in the head-on collision near Chadbourn.

An infant and a passenger who survived Tuesday’s horrific crash near Chadbourn are in critical condition.

Angela Lashon Shipman of Chadbourn and Jarvis McKinnon of Evergreen were killed when Shipman’s Buick crossed the center line and collided with an 18-wheeler, according to Trooper A. Godwin of the State Highway Patrol. The wreck occurred just after 1 p.m. on N.C. 410, near U.S. 74-76.

Shipman apparently went off the right, overcorrected and went into the path of a transfer truck driven by Dennis E. Floyd of Nichols, S.C., Godwin said.

Floyd was headed north and Shipman south when the crash happened. The impact knocked the car onto the southbound shoulder of the road. Floyd went off the right and struck a ditch and a fence before the truck overturned and came to rest facing north.

The front passenger in the car was airlifted to New Hanover, and the infant was taken by helicopter to UNC Hospitals, Godwin said.

Floyd sustained only minor injuries in the crash.

Traffic was blocked for several hours while emergency crews and the Department of Transportation cleaned up the crash.

The deaths were the third and fourth this year on county roads. A total of 24 people died in 22 vehicle crashes in Columbus last year.
