Chancy Askew will not face the death penalty for the 2018 killing of Trooper Kevin Conner.
Askew entered a guilty plea today in Brunswick County Superior Court as testimony began in his trial for the 2016 shooting of Jerome Parrott. Askew shot Parrott to death in a pool room in the Green Acres community. He was charged in that killing after he was indicted for Conner’s death in 2018.
Askew was set to go on trial and face capital murder charge in Conner’s death after the conclusion of his trial for Parrott’s murder. Because Askew was 16 when he killed Parrott, he could not face the death penalty.
Conner was shot to death during a traffic stop on U.S. 701 south in October 2018. Askew and Raheem Davis were in a stolen pickup when Conner stopped them for a speeding violation. The pair fled the scene, and Davis was later arrested after getting the pickup stuck on the railroad tracks in Fair Bluff.
Askew was arrested days later in South Carolina by a fugitive team with the U.S. Marshals.
Davis was initially charged in the murder, but the murder charge was later dropped to accessory.
Sentencing will take place Thursday at 10 a.m. in Brunswick superior court. The trials were moved due to pre-trial publicity.
