Hydration stations will be set up at several area fire departments during this weekend’s anticipated record heat.
Temperatures and heat indices could reach 105 and higher throughout the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. The most dangerous days are expected to be Saturday and Sunday.
Columbus County Emergency Services said emergency water points will be open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Locations include Nakina Fire-Rescue, Klondyke-Chadbourn Fire-Rescue, Lake Waccamaw Fire-Rescue, and the Whiteville fire department.
Officials also encourage everyone to take extra precautions during the triple-digit heat. Stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade or in air-conditioned areas, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on elderly neighbors, children, outdoor workers, and anyone without reliable cooling.
