More new cases as county COVID toll rises to 987

Drive-up testing is continuing at Columbus Regional Health Center by appointment.

Two local COVID-19 patients died while hospitalized Friday and Monday, bringing the death toll to 50 and the total number of cases to 987.

The Columbus County Health Department released its newest figures this afternoon. Local data on the COVID-19 pandemic is released every Monday and Thursday.

Thursday’s report will contain more demographic information, according to Daniel Buck of the Health Department. On Aug. 14, another 14 cases were confirmed, with three on Aug. 15, none on Aug. 16, and 12 Aug. 17 (today).

County residents who were tested for COVID-19 between Aug. 7-12 will have to wait a little longer for their test results. The Columbus Health department said Friday that the delay is due to problems with Orig3n, one of the labs handling COVID-19 tests for the state. The health department will notify residents with their results within three to four business days. The state health lab will now be handling local tests.

Statewide, officials have noted a downward trend in testing as well as positive results. The health department is warning residents that the virus is still dangerous, and the pandemic is far from over.
