Former Sheriff’s Home Struck by Gunfire

Former Sheriff Lewis Hatcher and his family escaped injury Thursday after someone fired multiple rounds at his home.

Hatcher, his wife and nephew were inside the home at Pridgen Acres near Clarkton when an individual opened fire on the home around 6:40 p.m.

The structure was struck multiple times, according to the report. Damages were estimated at $10,000. Investigators found a number of shell casings in the area as well.

The case is under investigation.

Hatcher served as chief deputy under Chris Batten, and was sworn in when Batten retired in 2014. He was defeated by Jody Greene in 2019, and later sued to be reinstated. That lawsuit was settled out of court.
