Jobs are on the rise in Columbus County this coming week. Several businesses and municipalities are seeking professionals to join their team. There is also some fun on the horizon so be sure to check out the area’s upcoming events.  

Jellystone Campground is holding a job fair this week.

The Jellystone Park Yogi Bear’s Campground will be holding a job fair on Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and then from 4 p.m.- 7 p.m. The fair will also be held again on Wednesday, Feb. 9 from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. The establishment is located at 626 Richard Wright Road in Tabor City.  

The town of Lake Waccamaw has a vacancy for a full-time firefighter position. Applicants must be Firefighter I and II certified and willing to submit to a background check and drug test. They must physically be able to perform duties, be 21 years of age or older, and possess a valid North Carolina Class B driver’s license. Salary will be based on experience. Substitute teachers are in high demand in Columbus County. Southeastern Community College is offering an Effective Teacher Training course that is mandatory to for individuals to complete if they are interested in a sub position. The class will run from Feb. 7-22 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. For more information or to sign up, call 910.788.6350. 

The Children’s Advocacy Center in Whiteville is in need of donations. The facility is currently seeking 8-ounce bottles of water for the children in their care. The items can be dropped off at 219 North Lee Street in Whiteville or at the BGHNC office located at 400 Flemington Drive in Lake Waccamaw.  

The Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina is seeking a Cottage Life Assistant Coach. Your essential responsibility is to serve as member of the youth treatment team. You will help the BGHNC comply with state and agency rules and regulations and provide children with a safe therapeutic environment of care. You will provide for their basic needs, develop therapeutic relationships, and teach youth the skills to transition back into families and communities.  Salary is $28,500 to $33,000 with health benefits as well as life insurance benefits. Jerrod Mustaff is planning to host basketball camps in Columbus this year. He visited the Boys and Girls Home last week to discuss the camps.

Speaking of the Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina, the campus had a special guest speaker this past week. Jerrod Mustaff, former pro basketball player for the New York Knicks and the Phoenix Suns, stopped by to talk to students at Thomas Academy and residential students about a basketball camp he plans to hold this summer in the area.  

Tabor City will be having its first ever “Spring Has Sprung” festival. The event is planned for Saturday, April 23 starting at 9 a.m. Some details are still pending, but the festival will feature a parade. crafts, food, vendors, entertainment, a kid’s zone, and even a car show. If you like to participate in any of the activities, please call the Greater Tabor City Chamber of Commerce at 910.377.3012. 

The Whiteville Junior Women’s Club will be hosting its 2nd annual Artic Alligator Plunge on Mar. 5 at 9 a.m. at the Lake Waccamaw State Park. To get in all the fun, vote for a celebrity challenger, or to register to participate, visit www.articalligatornc.com. The cost of registration is $30.  

The Greater Tabor City Chamber of Commerce will be having their 76th annual banquet on Tuesday, Mar. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ritz Center. The meal will be catered by Martha Hardwick Catering, and Tabor City Town Manager Al. Leonard will be the guest speaker for the evening. The cost is $25 per person, and seating is limited. Reservations can be made by the Feb. 22 deadline by calling 910.377.3012.
